How to Replace an audi a4 replacement key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes but the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. This morning i pull out the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks i put tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th stay closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that I might have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must be aware of the position and speed the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you encounter a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. 5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the cause of many issues with your vehicle. You can test the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms resistance between these two points.
