After a break of few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. The album is an departure from the ballads on previous albums, and features some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.
When they record the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and is financially in trouble. They decide to change their name and record a new album with a new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as lead vocalist. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and provides the band with a much-needed boost.
